Backend Engineer Roadmap
This document is my focused roadmap toward becoming a Backend Engineer
(with deployment knowledge) and landing an internship.
The goal is to stay focused and not just random learning.
Technology Roadmap (Level-Wise)
We divide everything into 3 levels:
- Level 1 → Internship Ready
- Level 2 → Strong Backend Candidate
- Level 3 → Standout / Advanced
Each section includes: - Estimated Time to Learn - Where to Implement - How to Showcase
LEVEL 1: Core Backend (Internship Ready)
These are non-negotiable.
1. HTTP + REST API Design
- Status codes
- Idempotency
- CRUD design
- Request validation
- Error handling
Implementation: SafeShare project
Showcase: Clean Swagger docs + proper endpoint design
2. PostgreSQL + SQL
- SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY
- Indexes
- Constraints
- Relationships (1:N, M:N)
- Basic query optimization
Cost: Free (local install / Docker)
Implementation: Replace any in-memory DB with PostgreSQL in SafeShare
Showcase: ER diagram + schema design in README
3. ORM (SQLAlchemy)
- Models
- Relationships
- Migrations
Cost: Free
Implementation: SafeShare database layer
Showcase: Clean model structure + migration setup
4. Authentication System
- JWT
- Refresh tokens
- Password hashing (Bcrypt)
- Role-Based Access Control
Cost: Free
Implementation: SafeShare
Showcase: Auth flow diagram in README
5. Docker (Properly)
- Multi-stage builds
- Docker Compose
- Environment variables
- Volumes
Cost: Free
Implementation: All backend projects
Showcase: docker-compose.yml + clean Dockerfile
6. Deployment (Mandatory)
Options: - Render (Free tier) - Railway (Limited free) - Fly.io (Free credits) - AWS EC2 Free Tier
Time: 1 week
Cost: Mostly free
Implementation: Deploy SafeShare publicly
Showcase: Live link on portfolio

LEVEL 2: Strong Backend Engineer
These increase job surface area.
7. Redis
- Caching
- Rate limiting
- Session storage
Cost: Free (Docker or Upstash free tier)
Implementation: Add caching + login rate limiter in SafeShare
Showcase: Explain performance improvement in README
8. Background Tasks
- FastAPI BackgroundTasks or Celery
- Async processing
Cost: Free
Implementation: File processing or email simulation
Showcase: Async architecture explanation
9. WebSockets
- Real-time updates
- Persistent connections
Cost: Free
Implementation: Real-time Task Manager project
Showcase: Demo video or deployed feature
10. GitHub Actions (CI/CD)
- Automated testing
- Docker image build
- Auto deployment
Cost: Free
Implementation: All backend projects
Showcase: CI badge in README

Only after mastering above.
- Nginx reverse proxy
